In a normal menstrual cycle, each month the uterine lining thickens to prepare for pregnancy. This is the body's natural mechanism in case an egg is successfully fertilized.

However, if fertilization does not occur, the thickened uterine wall will shed and come out through the vagina in the form of blood. This is known as the menstrual process.

5. Facilitate childbirth

At the time of delivery, or expelling the fetus, the uterus will contract. These contractions will help dilate the cervix and help the delivery of the baby to come out more easily.

6. Supports the urinary tract

Another function of the uterus is to support various surrounding organs such as the bladder, intestines and pelvic bones. The uterus also functions to separate the bladder and intestines.

7. Supports sexual response

In the uterus there are blood vessels and nerves that direct blood flow to the pelvis and external genitalia including the ovaries, vagina, labia, and clitoris so that they can provide a sexual response. The uterus also plays a role in the occurrence of orgasm.
